Netherlands: Exploring Utrecht's Canals
Utrecht is my favorite town in the Netherlands. It is vibrant and gorgeous; the people are festive and friendly. The old historic section is roughly a mile high and half mile wide, surrounded by a perimeter canal called the Singel. Running south to north is the Old Canal (Oudegracht) lined with old wharfs; construction started in 1122. Parallel to it is the smaller New Canal (Nieuwegracht), built from 1390 to 1393.
In and around the city are other tiny canals, some just big enough for a kayak. Good weather brings out every kind of recreational boat.
