In the Beginning

I became a serious photographer in 2001. I started with the Potomac River and the C&O Canal, and they were the subjects of my two books in 2005 and 2009. This area became a part of me forever.

By the end of 2009 I thought I had pretty much exhausted what I want to do there. But yet I have returned many times to get back to home base and to remember what started the journey.

The Covid-19 lockdown situation opened up a rare opportunity to spend time digging into archives to find old gems. I went through 14,000 old photographs - that were taken from 2001 to today - to build these Galleries. The Galleries are a mix of documentary and fine art photographs. So be it. I didn't worry about separating the two. I just want you to have a chance to witness some of the sights I have treasured over the years.

I made the map above in 2008 by integrating information from commercial maps, Park maps, emergency services maps, aerial views, and tales by whitewater paddlers and rockclimbers.
